Is feeding our genes the recipe to a lean body?

Perhaps because of our unique genotypes and phenotypes, humans love personalized treatment. So no wonder our preference for all sorts of customization has also hit the diet business. The new trend now is to scrutinize our genes to explain our extra pounds and discover how to get rid of them. Following the premise that the failure of most weight management programs relies on the “one-size-fits-all” dietary plans, several companies sell DNA tests bundled with services that include customized coaching, diet, fitness action plans, and delivered meals.

Since obesity has some 50% of genetic causes, digging into our genes for answers seem to be a powerful strategy – worth an initial investment that ranges from $149 to $299. But the real big picture is that the current overweight/obesity epidemic is multifactorial. Despite very rare conditions, our 15 obesity-related genes are only triggered by individual’s lifestyle choices – perhaps the most personal aspect of weight management.

Browsing several online testimonials of patients who have achieved impressive results with their gene-tailored diets, counseling and coaching seem to have been the key to their success. Since the core recommendations these patients were given are the premises of a regular healthy diet that everybody should be following, the recipe for successful programs is probably more on how to “personally” deliver the message then on the message itself.
